Do you know you can add geometric shapes to encase the page numbering for a more significant effect? If you’re still unsure about how to add page numbers in Word, then read on.
How to Add Page Numbers in Word
Page numbers in Word are pretty handy, especially when you are working with a lot of pages simultaneously. However, why work with the dull, age-old page numbers when you have plenty of fancy options to choose from.
Here’s how you can add page numbers within different shapes in Microsoft Word.
Step 1: The Header and the Footer
To insert page number in Word, the first step is to drag your cursor to the top, where a strip of the white section is visible. If you hover your pointer over this section, a tool-tip shall appear asking you to double-click to hide the white space.
You can number your pages here or add chapter titles in a fancy format.
As the name suggests, the footer is always at the bottom of your page. If your footer is not visible, you can alternately double-click on the enable/disable the footer option and add the page number in fancy shapes here. This is a crucial step when it comes to adding numbers to Word documents.
Step 2: Deciding Where to Insert Page Number
The foremost thing to decide is where you want to put page numbers in Word, i.e., in the header or the footer. Double-clicking on either should highlight them and allow you to enter the page number.
Before you do, set the alignment. You can use the Ctrl + J/L/R/E combo shortcuts to set the alignment for justified, left, right, or centered alignment, respectively.
Step 3: Insert the Shape
Click on the Insert menu and select the shape to store your page numbering. Hold down the shift key to resize the shape.
Step 4: Insert the Numbering
Once you have inserted the shape, right-click on it and select Add Text. Select whatever font/text color/color fill you want for the page numbering and the shape. You can add circles, squares, rectangles and change them on the fly once you have mastered these steps.
Click on the Header and Footer tab at the top; select Page Number tab. Make sure your cursor is inside the inserted shape. Click on Current Position to insert the page number.
