But if you’d rather not manually assign labels to incoming emails, a task that can be time-consuming, you can easily set things up to have Gmail automatically label inbound emails for you. Here’s how.

Automatically Label Incoming Emails in Gmail

In order to have Gmail sort incoming emails into folders using labels, you’ll need to have set up labels in Gmail first, and you’ve probably done this already. Color-coded labels in Gmail make it easier to organize your inbox.

Automatically labeling emails in Gmail involves creating a mail filter. Perform the following steps to shepherd incoming emails to the label you want.

In Gmail’s search bar at the top of your email, click on the Show search options icon. You can find this to the right of the email search bar. You will get a drop-down with various options. Here’s what you should see. In the From field, enter the email address you want automatically labeled in Gmail. This can be the email address your bank uses to communicate with you or that which a shopping website uses to send you its periodic newsletter. At the bottom of the drop-down, click the Create filter button. Select the field Apply the label, and choose a label from the drop-down beside it. Click the Create filter button at the bottom of the main drop-down.

When you receive a new email from this address, Gmail will automatically label it for you.

Organizing Your Email Is Easy

Mail can be disconcerting. For one, the sheer volume of it can throw you off your game. But thanks to Gmail’s labels and the ability to automatically label incoming emails, your work can get simpler, and your productivity can go up. Now all you have to do is look for new, unread emails in your inbox; the sorting is half done.
